Rainbow - Live in Munich DVD
Mastering 5.0

Comments: There are three soundtracks to choose from. The default soundtrack is the original Dolby Digital 2.0 stereo mix, encoded at 192Kb/s. The inclusion of the original audio is welcome in my opinion, however as I've noted on other music DVDs, it is really a shame the most inferior soundtrack has been made the default. Soundtracks in Dolby Digital 5.0 (448Kb/s) and dts 5.0 (768Kb/s) have been derived (or converted) from the stereo master. In the past I've cursed at some of these "surround" mixes of vintage material that have clearly been sourced from a stereo mix rather than a multi-track master. In this case, there was no multi-track source available, however the resulting surround soundtracks blew my expectations out of the water.

Both the Dolby Digital 5.0 and dts 5.0 soundtracks were converted from the original stereo mix by Steve Scanlon. Both contain depth and brightness that isn't even hinted at in the original soundtrack. It really is amazing to hear, in fact if it were not stated in the booklet, I would not pick these soundtracks as conversions.

Audio sync seems to vary a little, unfortunately. I noted a few moments, particularly during lengthy shots of Cozy's drumming, where cymbal and snare hits fall out of time with the audio. This may be an editing issue dating back to 1977, because of the fault's intermittent nature.

The surround channels are used to replicate the acoustics of a live venue via subtle echoes and audience applause between songs. The front soundstage carries the bulk of the work, with most instruments panned evenly to the centre. Dio's voice is always clear and distinct.

In comparing the three audio options, the dts was loudest and my preferred. The Dolby Digital equivalent doesn't quite match the depth of the dts audio, but is still impressive nonetheless. The stereo audio is flimsy and barely comparable. There is no LFE channel provided, however lower frequencies from the bass guitar are handled well by the main speakers.

Diesel (strings) - Live at the Vanguard DVD
DVD Mixing + Mastering 5.1 & Stereo

Comments: Live is as real and as close to the bone as you can get - and that's how diesel loves it. Treating his audiences to the strength and diversity of his musical skill-set by introducing a string quartet to his ensemble, the results can be SEEN and HEARD in glorious 5.1 surround sound on diesel's new DVD release diesel + strings 'live at the vanguard'. Recorded at Sydney's intimate Vanguard Theatre, diesel was joined by Lee Moloney and Ritchie Vez to make up this incredibly dynamic musical recipe and then the subtlety and smoothness of the string quartet (under arranger Marcus Holden) brings the whole show to the boil. Performing selections from albums as far back as his debut with the Injectors, diesel shines on classic cuts such as 'Tip Of My Tongue', '15' Of Snow', and 'Cryin' Shame'. He also finds new life in staples 'Don't Need Love' and 'Come To Me' and delivers his finest moments on new tunes 'Crazytown', 'Positive' and 'Saviour' and with the help of Sydney songstress Carmen D. Smith, tears the house down in their rendition of the Pete Wells penned 'Meaning Of Life'. For a limited time only the DVD contains a 14 track live CD.

Wayne Jones - Forgotten Melody CD
Mixing + Mastering + Stereo

"Steve Scanlon mixed and used his own plug-ins for compression, reverb and delay effects. I have to say that I couldn’t have picked a better person to mix and master this project. He did exactly what he was briefed to do… and more! I’m a happy boy! I hope he will be doing the next album with me."

Tony Ashton - Live at Abbey Road DVD
Recording + Mixing + Mastering + Stereo

Comments: The idea for this special and unique evening came from Jon Lord and Pete York, and it was held at Abbey Road Studio One in London to show support for their friend Tony Ashton. The CD edition (which has a special booklet with pictures from the gig) includes a great three track set from Tony Ashton and friends, a six track set from the old Whitesnake wrecking crew (minus David Coverdale), including a stripped down version of “Here I Go Again” done by just Bernie and Jon, and a track from Who man John Entwistle. Perhaps the most unique feature of the CD is the first and only Paice Ashton Lord reunion, right down to the brass and female backing singers. Sadly the event turned out to be Tony’s last night of rock and roll - he died just a year later. This release has been mixed from recordings made by the legendary Geoff Emerick (who engineered The Beatles) and prepared with the full co-operation of his wife Sandra - a great souvenir of what was a very enjoyable and moving occasion.

Deep Purple - California Jam DVD
5.0 Conversion and Mastering

As previously mentioned, the 5.0 channels are superb as mastered by Steve Scanlon. The bass is remarkably robust, considering the lack of an LFE channel. The video editor for the DVD is Brad Lawson and he’s done an excellent job. The DVD reveals source problems of tapes recorded for television more than 30 years ago, as the bright colors tend to get a little too hot and bleed. The track “You Fool No One” seems to lose tracking in a few places, or perhaps they had to resort to editing magic, because in some spots the sights and sounds don’t seem to sync. The original broadcast was produced by Jorn Winther (who the following year produced and directed “Alice Cooper: Welcome to My Nightmare”) and directed by Joshua White. Once again, the two-channel stereo mix is fine, but the 5.0 is highly recommended.

Deep Purple - Live in Concert 72-73 DVD
5.0 Conversion and Mastering

Deep Purple has been added to this site, this is JUSTICE, PURE JUSTICE!! The very first album I ever bought was "24-carat Purple", soon followed by "Made in Japan" so full circle with this review! This brandnew DVD is a very exciting view on the powerhouse Deep Purple on stage although it's funny to witness that the crowd existed of many very young people, most of them I estimate not older than 12 or 13 years! But Deep Purple performed very well, the exciting chemistry from "Made in Japan" is also on this DVD featuring splendid performances by all members. The track list from the legendary Denmark concert contains all the 'classics' delivering excellent work on the Hammond organ by Jon Lord, lots of fiery and biting guitar soli from an inspired Ritchie Blackmore, an enthousiastic and powerful performance by Ian Gillan and very dynamic support from Glover and Paice as the rhythm-section. In my opinion this Deep Purple was an innovative and pivotal blend of rock, classic and symphonic, they spearheaded the 'heavy progressive rock movement' in the early Seventies. This DVD also includes 3 tracks from the New York 1973 concert and 1 track from the legendary "California jam" concert in 1974 along lots of other extras.

Dixie Dregs - Live in Montreux 1978 DVD
Mixing and Mastering

If you are into the Dixie Dregs, this is the live performance to get. Good picture for the time period (1978) and even better sound. In fact, excellent fidelity. This DVD captures the energy and passion of a Dregs performance when they were in their prime. It's funny to see the audience reactions at this jazz festival. At first they are pretty subdued but by the end they are on their feet. The three extra videos are a major step down in picture and clarity but nice to see none-the-less. The only complaint is too short of a concert, only about 50 minutes. But that's not the fault of the DVD or the band. They were given a very limited time to play.
